Lankan Rupee Likely to Resume in 2014 McEwen Stakes

August 26th, 2014

Charging home to win a Caulfield barrier trial by more than five lengths on Tuesday morning, trainer Mick Price has revealed the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee is on track for a return to racing in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on September 6th.

The undoubtable standout performer of the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Lankan Rupee has not been seen at the races since more than overcoming a rain-soaked Randwick track to win the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) by more than two lengths on Day 1 of The Championships in early April.

Understandably pleased with the Redoute’s Choice gelding’s continually building form in the lead-up to his racing return and likely McEwen Stakes berth, Price said he’s yet to make a final decision on events early in Lankan R upee’s spring campaign, but all signs look good for September 6th’s Group 2.

“Craig (Newitt) said he felt food and won by five lengths,” Price told AAP.

“I don’t want to be missing any work, but I think he’s right on target.

“I reckon he’s pretty spot on.”

Securing a particularly commendable total of nine wins and three minor places from just 16 competitive race starts to date, Lankan Rupee was unable to string together much of a consistent run of form prior to be gelded at the conclusion of the 2013 Autumn Carnival.

Hitting great form over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, the gelding out of Estelle Collection won the Essendon Mazda 55 Second (955m) first-up and continued to build in condition on his way to back-to-back victories in the Listed Earl Grey Stakes (1000m) and Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Open (1200m).

Charging home to win the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) by close to four lengths first-up on February 8th before securing three incredible victories at the highest level of Australian racing back-to-back; winning each of the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) prior to his T.J. Smith triumph.
