Securing several impressive results over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer Trent Busuttin has revealed he is likely to accept a position in this final field of this weekend’s Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) for classy sprinter Cauthen.
Finishing outside the places just once in five competitive starts so far, Cauthen has not been seen at the races since poking clear to win a minor event over 1200m at New Zealand’s Trentham Racecourse on January 25th.
Also included in nominations for the Listed Drummond Golf Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, Busuttin revealed he is pleased with the continually building form of the Darci Brahma entire who completed a strong piece of work with jockey Damien Oliver aboard on Tuesday morning, and would rather accept into that event with, however is unlikely to make the cut as a result of ballot order.
“I’d prefer to run him in the 1200m race, but he’s a long way down the ballot order and if he doesn’t get a run, we’ll run in the 1000m race,” Busuttin told TVN.
“He’s a big, strong impressive horse. He’s beaten Long John and Shamus Award and then things went wrong.
“Ollie said he seemed to work nice this morning through the heavy going. He had a good blow afterwards.
“He’ll certainly take improvement from whatever he does on Saturday. Ollie trialled him up last Friday and was pleased with how he went so we expect a good run on Saturday.”
Debuting with an impressive nine length victory at New Zealand’s Te Rapa course in July last year, Cauthen crossed the ditch to finish a close second in thee Sweeney Can Do Agents CG (1000m) on August 3rd before securing without doubt his most impressive victory to date in the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) on August 24th.
Included amongst a field of just 13 nominations for the 2014 McEwen Stakes, Cauthen will be more than a chance of challenging the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee if allocated a favourable barrier.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 McEwen Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
