Morgan Confident of McEwen Stakes Success With Eloping

September 2nd, 2014

Likely to take her place alongside the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee at Moonee Valley on Saturday, co-trainer Peter Morgan is confident talented three-year-old Eloping is capable of a huge upset in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m).

A notable performer in major two-year-old events through the 2014 Autumn and early winter, Eloping has not been seen at the races since finishing fourth in the Group 1 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben on May 10th.

Pleased with the light weights and distance required of Eloping this weekend, Morgan told Racing Victoria he is not considering whether or not Lankan Rupee is resuming in peak condition, but is rather confident of the condition and capabilities of his filly.

“She’s still got a bit of a coat on her, but she hasn’t changed since she was winning during the autumn,” Morgan said.

“Everything’s in good order with her. As long as we can run a place for her pedigree.

“I don’t know whether he’s back to how he was or not.

“(Eloping’s) got nothing on her back… catch us.”

Winning each of her first two race starts including the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) upon debuting on course the beginning of this year, Eloping stamped her claims as one to watch when finishing second to standout filly Earthquake in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) on February 8th.

Unlucky to be blocked for a run and fourth in the Listed Sports 1000 (1000m) on March 1st, the Choisir filly returned to the winner’s circle when taking out the Bendigo Gold Rush (1000m) on March 15th before placing a credible seventh in the featured Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th.

Taking out the Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m) in her only other start prior to the Champagne Classic, Eloping has been confirmed to target the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) this time in, and will put herself in prime condition in success amongst classy company in the 2014 McEwen Stakes.
