Kuro has been transferred to the care of Team Freedman for his 2015 Spring Carnival campaign, and may return to competition in Saturday’s Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday after impressing in a barrier trial last week.
Kuro has been a strong and consistent performer for sprint king Joe Pride since first appearing on course in early 2014; posting six wins and four minors through only 13 competitive starts; twice placed in Group 1 feature races.
Having been transferred solely on account of the lack of Sydney spring targets, co-trainer Lee Freedman told Racing Victoria the team has been thrilled with the class displayed by the four-year-old since his arrival, and a decision will be made on a 2015 McEwen Stakes berth following a Moonee Valley track gallop on Tuesday.
“He’s coming along really well, he jumped out here at Flemington on Friday and I was very pleased with how he went,” Freedman said.
“Depending on how he works on Tuesday morning will determine on whether we run him in the McEwen or not.
“He’s a pretty gross sort of horse and he needed the trial on Friday and he’ll need the work on Tuesday.”
Stamping his claims as one to watch when debuting for success in a Hawkesbury minor over 1000m in March last year, Kuro returned to the paddock after credible mid-pack performances in each of the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m).
Taking out a pair of minor Sydney sprints before making a successful transition to black type racing in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) upon resuming in spring, the Denman entire continued his unbeaten run through the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) before capping an impressive year third in the major Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on November 1st.
Returning this year for third in the Listed Fireball Stakes (1100m), Kuro finished a close second to Sweet Idea in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), and while unable to figure in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) on Day 2 of The Championships, returned to form in taking out the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1200m) and third in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1200m) most recently.
2015 McEwen Stakes are due to be taken by midday today, while a final field and barrier draw will be completed and released on Wednesday.
