Fifteen talented sprinters have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley; highlighted by the inclusion of several previous winners at the highest level and some of the best most exciting Spring Carnival prospects.
Kuro has been transferred to the care of Lee and Anthony Freedman for his 2015 Spring Carnival campaign, and could very well receive the run of the race in the McEwen Stakes from the ideal barrier 2.
Posting six wins and a further four minors through 13 career starts so far, Kuro capped an impressive 2014 campaign third in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on November 1st; returning this year for third in the Listed Fireball Stakes (1100m) before running a close second in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).
While unable to figure when eighth in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) on Day 2 of The Championships, the Denman entire returned to the winner’s circle in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1200m) before placing third in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1200m) last time out on May 30th.
Chautauqua is undoubtedly the class horse confirmed in the 2015 McEwen Stakes final field, but will need some luck in running from barrier 12 and may be a little vulnerable over 1000m first-up.
Claiming six wins and as many minors through 14 career starts so far, the Encosta De Lago gelding returned in autumn for success in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m); progressing to second in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) before posting a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on Day 1 of The Championships.
Having returned to the paddock following a credible run for third in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m), Chautauqua will be ridden by Dwayne Dunn first-up.
Flamberge has form around Chautauqua this year and has reportedly taken great benefit from his time in the paddock and subsequent return to work in the lead-up to the McEwen Stakes.
Having run second in the Rubiton Stakes upon resuming this year, the Exceed And Excel gelding progressed to third in the Listed Bob Hoysted Handicap (1000m), and while unable to figure in The Galaxy, rounded out his campaign with success in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) on May 16th.
Tycoon Tara undoubtedly found career-best form to date through the recent Autumn Carnival but will need luck in running from barrier 11 if to return for success in the McEwen Stakes.
Running second in a Flemington minor over 1200m on January 31st, the Written Tycoon mare posted a maiden black type win in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) before repeating the dose in the Group 3 Premier Signs Stakes (1400m) a fortnight later.
Running fourth in the Vobis Gold Sprint (1200m), Tycoon Tara returned to the paddock following a pleasing effort for fifth in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) on May 2nd.
