Talented mare Wild Rain will be kept to a light spring preparation following an impressive stakes win first-up at Caulfield over the weekend, and may look to races like the 2016 McEwen Stakes (1000m) as potential targets as a result.
Wild Rain has been a strong and consistent performer for trainer Mark Kavanagh throughout her entire racing career so far, and stamped herself as one to watch through the forthcoming Spring Carnival with a typically classy performance for a comfortable win in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) first-up on July 16th.
Assistant trainer Levi Kavanagh revealed long term plans with the rising five-year-old include a campaign through the 2017 Brisbane Winter Carnival, and she will be kept to light duties this time in.
“We’ll aim to keep her fresh this preparation, as it’ll be quite a long by the time we get through the spring and head up to Queensland,” Kavanagh told RSN.
“That’s why she had a good hit-out in the first jump-out, winning by such a margin.
“We wanted to make sure that she had a good clean-out. After that when the jump-outs were cancelled again, I teamed her up with a partner for a few extra gallops to get her ready. I thought it’d be a wet track, but I wanted to have extra fitness in case it was wet.
“Even when we race her down the straight, we weren’t thinking it was ideal, but she ran second in the spring.
“She’s always a bit more forward than we think and she puts it down on track and tries really hard.”
Wild Rain has posted seven race wins and a further five minors through eighteen career starts to date; highlighted by three impressive and comfortable stakes wins.
Resuming in November for second in the Listed Dilmah Earl Grey Stakes (1000m) on Crown Oaks Day, Wild Rain progressed to second in the Ballarat Magic Millions 3&4.y.o Classic (1100m) before returning to winning form in the Listed Greater City Of Dandenong Stakes (1000m) on December 5th.
Running second to Husson Eagle in the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) on the Gold Coast on January 9th, the Manhattan Rain mare returned to the paddock after placing sixth in the Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on January 30th.
The 2016 McEwen Stakes is slated to run at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday, September 3rd.
