In Lankan Rupee’s first race of the new season, the 5-year-old Redoute’s Choice gelding was sent out the $1.22 favourite in the nine horse field. After jumping from the outside barrier jockey Craig Newitt had Lankan Rupee sitting off the leader Eloping into the home straight. But it was outside chance Angelic Light, a five-year-old mare trained by Robbie Griffiths, who denied the star sprinter a first up win with a great ride by Ryan Maloney while Eloping held on for third.

“I didn’t expect it, you’d have to be silly to say you would,” Griffiths said after the race.

“I was very happy with her first-up run and I thought today we were a real chance of running second and I would have been delighted with that.

“But to see her did deep and get on top of the world’s best sprinter, that’s very exciting.”
