Trainer Robbie Griffiths has been pleased with the form and class displayed by Angelic Light in the lead up to her 2015 Spring Carnival return and has revealed he would like to saddle the talented mare in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) first-up.
Angelic Light spent more than a year in the paddock with a string of unfortunate ailments prior to her 2014 spring campaign but stamped her claims as a serious Group 1 prospects when beating the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee to the line in the McEwen Stakes.
Understandably confident the conditions of the race will again play into his runner’s strengths, Griffiths confirmed the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) will figure as Angelic Light’s major target this time and is exciting by her prospects of success.
“We’re hoping to kick her off in the McEwen on the fifth of September, subject to whether her fitness levels are ready for that,” Griffiths said told AAP.
“She’s been a little behind after we had a little hiccup in the late autumn heading towards Adelaide.
“She did a little pace work during the week and she seems well so we’re hoping we’re on target for September 5, which will be a lead-in to the Group One Moir Stakes.
“She’s certainly very well and the recent scans are perfect. It’s just a question of whether we’re behind the eight-ball with fitness.”
Posting a career total of five wins and six minors through seventeen starts, Angelic Light progressed to fourth in the Moir Stakes following her 2014 McEwen triumph; finishing an unbelievably close second to Lankan Rupee in a fanning end to the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) on October 24th.
Failing to justify favouritism when fifth in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) on November 22nd, the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor returned for seventh in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 27th but was forced back into the paddock after suffering a minor tendon injury.
